Making Memories

Making Memories

How often is it that you meet someone you totally click with–someone that you talk with for a short time (or maybe a long time) and you know right off that person gets you?  I don’t have that experience a lot.  People tend to think that my nontraditional ways of looking at the world are a little odd, they look at me with curiosity when I say I’m ready to give up my financial security for a chance at creativity and fun, when I say I’d rather sleep under the stars in some far off place than stay in a five star hotel.  Anyhow, you get the idea.  You’ve read my blog, right?  I imagine I’ve raised a few eyebrows.

But then there are those few people that I share my ideas with whose eyes light up, and they say–Yes!  Do it.  You have to! Those are the people I’m talking about, the people that totally get me.

Sometimes they’re my oldest friends–the ones I played The Rainbow Game with in the fifth grade.  Sometimes they’re my high school friends–the ones I cried to when the guy I had a crush on didn’t like me.  Occasionally they’re my coworkers–like my work wife who dares to try pole dancing with me.  And every once in a while it’s somebody completely new, someone I least expect who surprises me with the ability understand my most far off dreams.

I treasure those connections.  We all should.

In our busy lives, we often forget to nurture those relationships.  We get sidetracked with work and errands and emails and stress.  We forget that in the end, all of those things don’t matter.  In the end, what we are left with is memories and love.

I recently missed an opportunity to make a beautiful memory with a great friend.  And now I’m looking back thinking–what the heck was I thinking? I should have jumped at the opportunity, engulfed myself in it, drank it in.  I let being practical outweigh whimsical.

Yes, occasionally, there is a place for practical.  But whimsical is more fun.  And I vote for fun!  So in the future, when someone says, you want to make a memory? I’m not just going to say yes, I’m going to say hell yes!

So in the spirit of making memories, here’s my song of the week (one of my absolute favorites).  Did I also mention Bon Jovi is coming here in concert?  I’m SO excited!  I’m going this time – no matter who I have to drag with me!  (Seriously, watch the video…it’ll break your heart and give you the best reason to keep making those memories.)

(You Want To) Make A Memory
Bon Jovi

Hello again, it’s you and me

Kinda always like it used to be
Sippin’ wine, killing time
Trying to solve life’s mysteries

How’s your life, it’s been awhile?
God it’s good to see you smile
I see you reaching for your keys
Looking for a reason not to leave

If you don’t know if you should stay
If you don’t say what’s on your mind
Just breathe
There’s nowhere else tonight we should be

You wanna make a memory?

I dug up this old photograph
Look at all that hair we had
It’s bitter sweet to hear you laugh
Your phone is ringin I don’t wanna ask

If you go now, I’ll understand
If you stay, hey, I got a plan

You wanna make a memory?
You wanna steal a piece of time?
You can sing the melody to me
And I could write a couple lines
You wanna make a memory?

If you don’t know if you should stay
And you don’t say what’s on your mind
Just breathe
there’s nowhere else tonight we should be

You wanna make a memory?
You wanna steal a piece of time?
You can sing the melody to me
And I can write a couple lines

You wanna make a memory?
